October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this year, breast cancer awareness is served on a plate in Washington, DC. For the entire month, chefs and restaurants are donating a portion of their sales to Take A Bite out of Breast Cancer and supporting Pink Jams!, an outreach and fundraising campaign focusing on early detection in young women under 40 years old. There are more than a dozen establishments in the D.C. area that have signed on and they have enlisted the help of local food bloggers to get the word out. They have been partnered with different restaurants on different nights:
-
Travel Eat Repeat will kick off the month Saturday, October 1st at Hudson, which has generously agreed to donate 35% of that evening’s proceed to Pink Jams!
-
Done Like Dundee…Gone like Gandhi has a touching personal story about breast cancer on his blog and is inviting you to meet him at Tonic Foggy Bottom on the 11 & Tonic Mount Pleasant on the 12.
-
Chef Tony is giving away 10% of sales for EVERY Wednesday nights in October, with Been There Eaten That and Lunching in the DMV acting as ambassadors on October 12th and 19th respectively.
-
Jill of Cuisine Queen wants you to take a bite out of Pesce October 13th and 20th. You can also join Katie of Well Fed and Rested at Tuscana West for bite or a drink on October 14th.
-
Finally if you haven’t had the chance to check out Chef Todd Gray’s new NOMA restaurant Watershed, October 23rd is your chance! Mary of Girl Meets Food will be there to welcome you (and tell you what’s good on the menu too!)
Other participating restaurants include Proof on Sunday October 2nd, Hank’s Oyster Bar (Alexandria location on October 3-4 and DC restaurant October 4-5), Piccolo Restaurant (October 12th), Madam’s Organ (October 27th) or Bankok Joe’s. As for me, I have signed on to be the Ambassador at Luna Grill and Diner. The owners, who have a personal connection to the cause, have kindly agreed to donate 25% of sales every Tuesday in October. I will be there on October 11th and 18th and I hope you will too! 😉
