There's nothing French about Halloween. Unless you want there to be ;-) Since Ladurée no longer offers this beautifully stunning box of Halloween macarons (le sigh), you could head to Olivia Macaron since the Georgetown shop offers an adorable pumpkin jack themed macaron. Or you could also bake the quintessential parisian treat at home... And while I'm still traumatized by my attempts to make candy corn infused vodka, maybe the Halloween Candy would work better in a macaron: If making or eating macarons isn't your thing, you might want to a) stop reading my blog b) dress up like one instead... Speaking of dressing up like a french pastry, I'm also a big fan of this croquembouche ...

High Holiday macaroons Macarons
It's the High Holy Days and patissier François Payard introduced a Rosh Hashanah macarons collection for the occasion. Macaroons are typically associated with another Jewish holidays, Passover, but these are proper French macarons that play on traditional Rosh Hashanah foods: apple, honey and raisins. A common greeting on Rosh Hashanah is Shana tovah u'metukah. That's Hebrew for "a good and SWEET new year." I think it's important to take it seriously. And start the new year with many many sweet macarons! François Payard's Rosh Hashanah macarons collection (with an assortment of green apple and honey macarons and raisin pecan macarons) is available at his Manhattan patisseries for $29 for ...
You say tomato… I say tomato macaron ;-)
Belgium is famous for its chocolates, and while chocolate isn't something I actually like or know much about, I can still appreciate cute little chocolate spots like Alex & Alex, which pairs its chocolate with champagne. I can also appreciate the beautiful Marcolini flagship store, a chic and minimalist space which looks more like an elegant jewelry shop. Pierre Marcolini is kind of like the Pierre Hermé of chocolate if you will... His place Sablon area boutique is (rightfully) on all the tourists' guidebooks as a must visit spot for chocolate lovers. But Pierre also makes beautiful macarons. See, the chocolatier actually started his career as a patissier, winning the coveted World ...

‘Tis the Season for… Cherry Blossom Macarons
DC Patisserie is celebrating the cherry blossom season with a lovely limited edition macarons box designed by Torie Partridge, of Cherry Blossom Creative. Torie is a muralist and graphic artist who does a lot works with the Washington food community. She recently designed a sweet cherry blossom label for Capital Kombucha's Cherry Blossom bottle and you can see one of her murals on the walls at Union Market. She embellished the bottom of the special box set of macarons with a whimsical koi fish pond design. Inside the box come two cherry blossom macarons, with a cherry jam center surrounding a cherry blossom creme filling, and one of each of the following seasonal flavours: black sesame, ...
Roland Garros Macarons
Tennis and macarons go la main dans la main in France. Every year, Paris plays host to one of the grand slam tournament, les Internationaux de France de Tennis, which the French just call Roland Garros (after the stadium where it takes place.) I've attended a couple of games in my days, including an all Williams women finals back in 2002. While we don't make everyone wear white like some other fancy tournament, this is Paris and it's tennis, so you probably won't be too surprised to hear that you can purchase champagne and macarons at the concession stands. I mean, beer and hot dogs are SO Flushing Meadows ;-) In 2011, they came in kind of unappetizing colours though: yellow (for the tennis ...
Kiss Eat me I’m Irish!
I have no reason to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day... I could probably go back generations and generations and I wouldn't find anyone remotely associated with Ireland in my ancestry. And while green beer is not enough to entice me to celebrate the holiday, green macarons might do the trick:Shamrock Macaron, made with Irish Whiskey and Dark Chocolate, from Domique Ansel (one of my favourite macaron shop in New York.)Joyeuses fête de la Saint-Patrick! ...
Yes We Can… Eat Macarons!
Everything is political in D.C. Even our macarons ;-) The bite size French dessert has grown in popularity in the district since the last presidential election so it was only a matter of time until this happened: Campaign 2012 macarons pictured in least partisan flavour ever: vanilla! vanilla vanilla! Photo courtesy of The Sweet Lobby. These would be perfect for any debate watch party, fundraisers etc. ;-) The political macarons are available in limited quantities for individual purchase at The Sweet Lobby on Capitol Hill (where else?) every day for just 50 cents more than the regular macarons. For larger orders (16 macarons minimum) allow for 5 days notice. Of course, since ...

You say macaroon, I say macaron. I say do donut, I say doughnut…
As I was getting my stomach ready for National Doughnut Day (which has been celebrated on the first day of June since 1938) I started receiving a couple of message asking me if I was excited about National "Macaroons" Day. Clearly, if there were some kind of foodie holiday dedicated to my favourite little sweet treat, it would have been marked in my filofax (yes, I still use a filofax...) months ahead of time. So I rightfully assumed May 31st actually celebrates the coconut kind of macaroon, not the often spelled macaroon French macaron. The confusion between macaron and macaroon drives me crazy. They're SO different. But I get it, macaron is practically impossible to pronounce for an ...
