I don’t usually check into bars before 9AM (well, at least not too often.) But I had a good reason to walk into Tom Brown’s Hogo this morning – and for once it wasn’t rum but coffee. Vigilante Coffee to be exact…
After taking over Mr. Yogato near Logan Circle and Biergarten Haus on H Street, Chris Vigilante is bringing his pop-up coffee shop to the Convention Center area and taking over Hogo (1017 7th St NW) every weekday in March, from 7AM to 2PM. In addition to locally roasted coffee, the Vigilante Coffee pop up is also offering locally baked goods from Whisked. The lovely Jenna Huntsberger, who had already provided quiches for Chris’ pop-up at Mr. Yogato, is expanding her offerings to include cookies (including Nutella milk cookies… reason enough to go right?), scones and quiches. And there’s free wifi so patrons like myself can just drop in, enjoy a cup of Japanese pour-over coffee while getting some work done underneath Steve Zissou’s giant portrait!
What’s next for Chris Viligante and his team after the pop-up at Hogo wraps up March 29th? The roaster will be scouring South and Central America, looking for new coffee source while still working on his next project: Maketto. Maketto is Erik Bruner-Yank and Will Sharp’s (of Toki Underground and DURKL fame respectivelly) mixed retail/Asian street market space, set to open sometimes this summer (keep your fingers crossed) at 1351 H Street NE. It will provide a more permanent space for Vigilante Coffee who will run an espresso and Japanese pour-over bar on the 2nd floor. Until then, though, I’m glad to welcome them to my neighborhood for a few weeks!
