It’s been a big couple of exciting weeks for Ladurée. In April, they opened a new booth, officially called a carrosse (or horse-drawn carriage) at Heathrow. That’s great news if you’re traveling through London. They’ve also just opened a new shop in Covent Garden and one Rue Royale*. Again, great if you live in London or Paris, and I’ll make sure to check out their expanded Parisian digs when I’m home in August. I’m always thrilled to see Ladurée spread the gospel of the macaron to new places but it all doesn’t do me much good. I live in America, a Ladurée-deprived part of globe. At least until August. I have known about the opening for a while, and hinted at the rumours in a post on the DC opening of their sister-patisserie Paul, though I was not in a position to reveal anything… But now I am. Eater NYC broke the news and it’s official! Blair Waldorfs of the Upper East Side and other macaron lovers rejoice, Ladurée is (finally) opening in the US. Hurray!!!
Ladurée labels itself as a fabricant de douceurs, a maker of sweets. It is credited with having popularized the macaron as we know it today: a colourful assemblage of two meringue discs held together with a sweet filling of flavoured buttercream, jam or ganache. Over the past ten years, macarons have gone from trendy to fashion-victims in France, and from unknown sweets to fashionable treats in the US. They’re now very easy to find in New York, at La Maison du Chocolat, Bouchon Bakery or Payard for example, and even in the District too (my go to spots: Michel Patisserie sold at ACKC, Tout de Sweet and Cacao by Jacques Poulain). I’m still thrilled about Ladurée‘s upcoming opening in New York, because not just about the macarons. Visiting Ladurée is a luxurious and special experience, like shopping at Chanel. It’s about the decor, the refined atmosphere, tasteful service, the tradition, the history. And, yes, it’s also about tasting some of, if not the best macarons, in the world. Ladurée will open at 1PM on August 26th at 845 Madison Avenue. I can’t wait!! (though I will, in fact, have to wait since I’ll be in Europe until late August – and will undoubtly make a quick stop at LaDuree in Paris – and won’t make it to NYC until at least the first week of September…)
* Ladurée’s new parisian address, at 18 rue royale, is an expansion of their original location which opened in 1862 as a boulangerie at 16 rue royale and still operates as a salon de thé and pâtisserie.
